Boolean searching

Using or will find pages that contain either word, but not necessarily both. Using and will find pages that contain both words. Using not will eliminate words from your search. To find all words that begin a certain way, end the words with a *. You can use parentheses to organize your boolean search. See examples below for further explanation.

Please note that or, and, and not must be typed in lowercase for them to work correctly.

Examples

Robert Frost

This will find pages that have both 'robert' and 'frost' on them. This is the same as using the search Robert and Frost.

Twain or Clemens

This will find pages that have either 'twain' or 'clemens' on them.

Juliet not Romeo

This will find pages that have Juliet on them but not Romeo.

odysse*

This will find pages that have 'odyssey,' 'odysseus,' and less useful things like 'odyssequack' on them.

Chris* Berg

This will find pages that have both 'berg' and 'chris,' 'christopher,' or less useful things like 'chrisquack.'

(Chris or Christopher) and Berg

This will find pages that have 'berg' and either 'chris' or 'christopher'.

(Mark and Twain) or (Sam* and Clemens)

This will find pages that have either Mark and Twain or Sam(+ anything, including 'uel') and Clemens.

(Mark and Twain) or (Sam* and Clemens) not (duck or quack)

This is the same as the above search except it eliminates most references to ducks (very important).
