Caruso, Rich

American composer (see songs) working primarily in English

Coming from a family of musicians and entertainers, Rich Caruso began his musical career over 30 years ago at the age of nine. He attended the University of Miami, but left in his final year to join the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. This was followed by extensive touring stints with Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente and many others, including performances at The Newport Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall.

In the early eighties Rich returned to Miami to raise his family. Since that time he has been working in the South Florida area as a pianist and trombonist. He has performed with the Fort Lauderdale Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra, the Miami Ballet Orchestra, the Miami Opera Guild Orchestra, including performances with Luciano Pavarotti and Franco Corelli.

In 1996, Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzesi conducted the Symphony of the Americas in a concert featuring several original orchestrations by Rich combining both jazz and classical elements. More arrangements were requested and featured in concerts in 1998 and 1999. New works are in progress.

Convery, Robert

American composer (see songs) working primarily in English

Robert Convery is a contemporary American composer currently residing in Long Island City, NY and actively composing and accepting commissions.

Mr. Convery has written four one-act operas, twenty cantatas, MASS for choir and orchestra, choral works, nine song cycles and over 150 songs for voice and piano. Mr. Convery's best know choral work is SONGS FOR CHILDREN, a setting of poems by children interred in the Terezin Concentration Camp and scored for String Quartet, Piano and mixed Chorus. Look for a presentation of his cantata, THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD, in an upcoming Making Art documentary by PBS to air on PBS of NYC.

His non-vocal repetoire includes: VARIATIONS AND FUGUE for large orchestra, LYRIC ESSAY, ELEGY FOR STRINGS, ORGAN CONCERTO, a string quartet and various chamber and piano works. He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, Westminster Choir College and a doctorate from the Julliard School. He has composition studied with Ned Rorem, David Diamond and Vincent Persichetti and has been the recipient of numerous grants, awards and residencies too numerous to mention here.

His entire works are catalogued at Lincoln Center's New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in Special Collections.
