Opera
There are an incredible amount of excellent opera sites on the web, and my site was specifically designed to not compete with them (see our Singers' Bibliography and art song catalog for our biggest strengths). All we aim to do here is keep track of some of the best of them for you.
Browse through the links below or see the category menu on the left. See the Home page to read about the newest links, books, and songs I've added or subscribe to the newsletter. Check out this list of opera-related books as well in our site's Singers' Bibliography.
The sites that I think are particularly practical for day-to-day work are marked with a toolbox icon. Many of the other sites are also excellent and worth your perusal.
Web indexes
Operabase (If you check out one opera site from this list, make it this one. More opera information than you can shake a stick at. Fantastically organized links to many of the best resources listed here)
- Yahoo Opera page
- OPERA--Homepage from the Mining Company
Non-profit resources
Aria Database (texts, translations etc. well-established, huge database.)
- Rose Guccione.com Favorite Links (overlaps with many links here but has better reviews and several links I don't have here for various reasons)
- Parterre Box ("the world's only totally OUT opera magazine" with critically acclaimed, outrageous reviews and news for any gender-preference)
- Libretto Homepage
OperaGlass (another very good opera site with a lot of information; also notice operas with 0-6 voices)
OperaWeb (Yahoo's pick for best opera site)
- Opera Notes and Mike's Miscellany (Mike Richter)
The Opera Schedule Server (see also general performing arts schedules on the Music page)
- Opera! (Some clever opera synopses, lots of links, some singer bios, and a good collection of opera jokes and quotes)
- Nimbus RealAudio Prima Voce page (over 200 Real Audio recordings of "Golden Age" singers--wow!)
- Operissimo (yup, another great one; you see why I don't compete?)
- Opera of America a web page dedicated to opera by American composers--not OPERA America, below.
- Opera
- OperaStuff
- Tenorland
- Nessundorma.com (commercial elements)
- Bassocantante's Opera Shop (RealAudio recordings of old singers on the web, history and information on singers and opera, humor)
- The Virtual Opera House (information, opera introduction, humor, etc.)
- Young Artists Help Pages by Laura Claycomb (very knowledgable advice on topics from Europe and America through competitions to agents!)
Commercial resources
Classical Singer (formerly New York Opera Newsletter)
- Arioso On-Line Business Directory of Concert Music (professional directory and search engine of 4000+ musicians, opera houses, management, foundations and grant-providers, etc.)
- Classical Vocal Repertoire (an excellent source for opera and art song scores; they have both the standards and unexpected treasures regularly in stock. Their online catalog is 4% of their total stock.)
- TIS (another good online source for scores and sheet music)
- OPERA America
- Opera News Online
- Back Stage Online (Musical Theater)
- The Undone Divas (a humorous and--if so desired--educational one-woman opera comedy show available. Some links as well.)
