1/11/99: Site Update

No updates lately because of some very time-consuming personal planning going on for our future.  I've made a few updates to some links around the site (particularly check out Operabase on the Opera page if you don't know about that resource already); added a Lee Hoiby song cycle for mezzo, baritone, wind quintet and piano; added a Richard Cumming cycle for bass-baritone, We Happy Few; added a book about German auditioning; added a few links on the Personal page, and maybe a few other things besides.  Tour has started back up today, and most of the real time-consuming personal planning stuff is hopefully behind me, so some more site updates should be forthcoming now.   I've received some more nice responses to the web site--they are always appreciated; thank you.   Please contribute links, books, and music, and please tell others about the site!

12/29/98: Happy Birthday Karyn!

First, happy birthday to my wife, Karyn. One of her presents was The Language of the Garden, by Andy Vores--as an aside, I am happy to report that not only was the music excellent, as far as a cursory look can ascertain, but the edition was also very professional looking.  We both look forward to her looking at it more thoroughly.

Second, happy holidays to all of you and best wishes for a great 1999.  We certainly had a happy Hanukkah and a merry Christmas, and we are looking forward to New Year's Eve.

Finally, we have three new song cycles (all for soprano or high voice; sorry, everybody else) by Daron Hagen in the song catalog.   They are Echo's Songs, Dear Youth, and Merrill Songs.  If you use those links, click on "song contents" (highlighted in red) to really start examining them.  Future updates should be a Lee Hoiby cycle, an Irving Fine cycle, and a Richard Cumming cycle.  Maybe some of the composers I contacted this fall who expressed interest but haven't yet had time to participate will also soon be able to contribute.

Oh, and I sent out a new newsletter sometime in the past week or so.  You can read it here, if you wish, or join here, to get your own copy the next time I send it out.

12/21/98: Site Update

Here's the update, folks!  A day late but hopefully not a dollar short.  The site should now work about equally for Internet Explorer 4.0 users and Netscape Navigator 4.5 users.   Actually, it seems in my use of the site that Netscape Navigator handles the song catalog and bibliography better because IE4 sometimes doesn't jump all the way to the correct place on a page.  In any case, the site looks almost identical in both browsers.  I didn't bother to update a few lesser-used pages like the old news and old newsletter pages because they contain old information, but I might even get around to them sometime.

The song catalog now more clearly directs you to how to obtain a copy of each song (click on the "GET IT!" links). Various other improvements include better linking to outside sources in the Anthology page, better edition information throughout the catalog, a more flexible and more clear approach for cataloging non-piano-vocal music, clearer layout in the main Bibliography pages, and other small cosmetic changes.   The entire site looks a bit different even on IE4 because I had to use a different approach to the HTML coding--less elegant, but more sturdy.

The number of site visitors is still riding pretty high compared to only a month ago.  The number of subscribers to the newsletter also took a recent jump so I guess I'll actually get around to sending out a new one soon (only about 100% late!).

Now that the site update is done (perhaps with a few more bugs to catch, but essentially done) I'll probably cut down my work time on the site to just an hour a day, which I will spend inputting songs or bibliography entries.   Please write and tell me how you like the site, how you like the update, and if you find any obvious unsightliness or error anywhere.

I also put up the solo vocal music catalog that Carl Fischer sent me.  You can find it here.  And the first ECS Daron Hagen cycle, Love Songs, of several more to come is in the catalog too--you can begin exploring it here (take the "song contents" link that  is highlighted in red to really start examining it).  I really like the four cycles I've heard of his: Love Songs, Echo's Songs, Dear Youth, and Merrill Songs.   Impressive stuff.  The remaining three cycles will get in the catalog as soon as possible.  Selfishly, I hope I find some cycles of his for low voice--all the ones I've seen so far have been for high voice.

12/13/98: Site News

I've been spending a great deal of my website time fixing the site up for Netscape users.  While IE 4.0 users will probably only notice some small changes, Netscape users should be seeing the site in a way much more like the IE4 experience.  It's a big job.  Again.  :-)

I took advantage of this revamping to begin a new news page.  So, welcome to the new news page.  A tabula rasa.

This revamping has taken precedence over inputting new songs and books for the moment, eager though I am to get some Hagen, Cumming, Fine, and other composers' works in the catalog.  Hopefully this won't take me more than a week.   As the number of our site visitors has increased dramatically, so has my ability to analyze statistics about you--and more than half of you use Netscape.  So, I'm spending a lot of time for all you guys to get the look I intended.
