Music Comments: quarter = c. 112. Marked "Very crisp and lively." attractive and lyrical melody that alternates between two transpositions of the mixolydian mode.

Text Comments: Where do the humans come from? Where are the humans begun from? And how did I get here so small? Though everyone somehow arrived in it the world keeps adding up odd. If one and one make always two can one and one make one at a time and what's the connection with God? O where did the humans jump from? Where did the humans jump from? And how do the humans fall? Though everyone lands on a mom and pop there's a hitch to a family tree. If two together have to marry does one from two leave one to carry and what is a stork to me? Now where do the humans come from? What are the humans sprung from? And how did I get here at all?

Music Comments: "Freely effusive," a capella, introducing the next song in the cycle, "O, For Such a Dream." The music moves with the text from a formal "proper" sentiment, through a more breathless and personal confession of fear and loneliness, back to a rally of the original "proper," weighty sentiment (but with even less conviction than the first time through).

Text Comments: The Lord knows best what will end this terrible strife and I pray he will guide the people accordingly. I am almost getting reckless Sometimes I think if you were only out I wouldn't care what they did. Is that not most too selfish? At least I hope they will be able to do as will cause the least bloodshed.

Music Comments: Duration 1:25 Still, even, melancholy.

Text Comments: Years ago, as dusk seeped from the blue spruce in the yard, they ran to hide. It was easy to find those who crouched in the shadow of the chicken coop or stood still among motionless horses by the water trough. But I never found the willful ones who crossed the fence and lay down in the high grass to stare up at the pattern of stars and meandering summer firefly sparks. Now I stand by the fence and pluck one rusted strand of wire, harp of lost worlds. At the sound the children rise from hiding and move toward me: eidolons, adrift on the night air.

Text Comments: As I was washing under a span of the bridge of Cardigan and in my hand my lover's shirt with a golden beetle to drub the dirt, a man came to me on a steed, broad in shoulder, proud in speed, and he asked me if I'd sell the shirt of the lad I love so well. But I said I wouldn't sell for a hundred pounds and packs as well, nor if the grass of two ridges were deep in wethers and the whitest sheep, nor if two hay meadows were choked with oxen which were ready yoked, nor if St. David's nave were filled with herbs all pressed but not distilled. Not even for all that would I sell the shirt of the lad I love so well.

Music Comments: Duration 1:10 Violent, rough; unstoppable.

Text Comments: There was a man of double deed sowed his garden full of seed. When the seed began to grow, 'Twas like a garden full of snow; When the snow began to melt, 'Twas like a ship without a belt; When the ship began to sail, 'Twas like a bird without a tail; When the bird began to fly, 'Twas like an eagle in the sky; When the sky began to roar, 'Twas like a lion at the door; When the door began to crack, 'Twas like a stick across my back; When my back began to smart, 'Twas like a penknife in my heart; When my heart began to bleed, 'Twas death and death and death indeed.

Music Comments: quarter=72, marked "Lyrical, Legato". Beautiful song; tonal with occasional evocative tritone and other dissonances. Although listed for soprano, the song would fit comfortably in a medium voice (easy high E and F).

Text Comments: We walked together in the dusk To watch the tower grow dimly white, And saw it lift against the sky Its flower of amber light. You talked of half a hundred things, I kept each hurried word you said; And when at last the hour was full, I saw the light turn red. You did not know the time had come, You did not see the sudden flower, Nor know that in my heart Love's birth was reckoned from that hour.

Music Comments: quarter = 80; marked "very legato and expressive."

Text Comments: Your eyes drink of me, Love makes them shine, Your eyes that lean so close to mine. We have long been lovers we know the range of each other's moods and how they change But when we look at each other so then we feel how little we know; The spirit eludes us, Timid and free--Can I ever know you or you know me?
