Music Comments: Duration 1:20 Wintry, minor triad arpeggios, rapidly articulated support a fairly low vocal line.

Text Comments: Still may you with your frozen fingers cut Treasures of Winter, if you planted well; The Winter-sweet against a sheltering wall, Waxen, Chinese and drooping bell; Strange in its colour, almond in its smell; And the Witch-hazel, Hamamelis mollis, That comes before its leaf on naked bough, Torn ribbons frayed, of yellow and maroon, And sharp of scent in frosty English air... Gardener, if you listen, listen well: Plant for winter pleasure, when the months Dishearten; plant to find a fragile note Touched from the brittle violin of frost.

Music Comments: Duration 0:50 A fast moving little ghost story--light and airy.

Text Comments: Its former green is blue and thin, And its once firm legs sink in and in; Soon it will break down unaware, Soon it will break down unaware. At night when reddest flowers are black Those who once sat thereon come back; Quite a row of them sitting there, Quite a row of them sitting there. With them the seat does not break down, Nor winter freeze them, nor floods drown, For they are as light as upper air, They are as light as upper air.

Music Comments: An earlier version of the other song by Bacon by the same name. Mostly in a medium tessitura.

Text Comments: Full text: The grass so little has to do, a sphere of simple green, With only butterflies to brood, And bees to entertain; And stir all day to pretty tunes The breezes fetch along, And hold the sunshine in its lap And bow to ev'rything; And thread the dews all night like pearls, And make itself so fine A duchess were too common for such a noticing. And even when it dies, to pass In odors so divine, As lowly spices gone to sleep, Or amulets of pine. And then to dwell in sov'reign barns, And dream the dreams away, The grass so little has to do, I wish I were a hay!

Music Comments: If the A5 is too high (it is only touched upon), there is an optional E5 to replace it; this makes the highest pitch in the song an F#5. The piece is marked Allegretto moderato. It begins very simply in Am but as the description of the life of grass takes shape the music becomes more active. Perhaps "warm and dreamy" might be a decent summary.

Music Comments: Starts with fluttering strings, over which piano, vibraphone, and oboe accompany vocal melody. Wind interlude as mother leaves the grocer's chair. Roulade and fluttering strings as in first song under free vocal part, then with the addition of legato winds. Wind interlude again, roulade and fluttering strings, then chordal accompaniment to voice and clarinet duet with words "grocer was familiar with these bedraggled wives..." Then short broad, full instrumental ensemble section, followed by fluttering strings on line "Their forlorn, aimless, pathetic wandering..." Final wind interlude segues gradually into next piece of cycle.

Text Comments: "The grocer greeted [her] in a perfunctory manner and offered her a chair, which she took gratefully. She sat for a quarter of an hour without moving....
At length she rose and went out on the walk, carrying the baby...
She walked up and down the street, desolately homeless. She didn't know what to do with herself. She knew no-one except the grocer. She grew bitter as she saw a couple of ladies pass, holding their demitrains in the latest city fashion. Another woman passed by, pushing a baby carriage in which a child sat, bouncing and laughing and shouting. It's clean round face glowed from it's pretty fringed hood. She looked at the dusty clothes and grimy face of her own little one and walked savagely...
The grocer was familiar with these bedraggled and weary wives. He was accustomed to see them sit for hours in his big wooden chair, nursing tired and fretful children. Their forlorn, aimless, pathetic wandering up and down the street was a daily occurrence, and had never possessed any special meaning to him."

Music Comments: Begins moderately but has many tempo changes (usually to faster tempos: "poco piu mosso" and "Scherzando"). Relatively busy accompaniment and fast text declamation. Looks pretty challenging to learn, but probably quite worth the effort.

Text Comments: What does the hangman think about When he goes home at night from work? When he sits down with his wife and Children for a cup of coffee and a Plate of ham and eggs, do they ask Him if it was a good day's work And ev'rything went well or do they Stay off some topics and talk about The weather, baseball, politics And the comic strips in the papers And the movies? Do they look at his Hands when he reaches for the coffee Or the ham and eggs? If the little Ones say, Daddy, play horse, here's A rope does he answer like a joke: I seen enough rope for today? Or does his face light up like a bonfire of joy and does he say: It's a good and dandy world we live In. And if a white face moon looks In through a window where a baby girl sleeps and the moon-gleams mix with Baby ears and baby hair--the hangman--How does he act then? It must be easy For him. Anything is easy for a hangman, I guess.
