Music Comments: "Delicately flowing". "sempre legato". Quarter = 96. Piano part flows forward. It seems a liquid voice would suit this song particularly well.

Text Comments: An observation that poppy petals, when ready to fall, do not make a sound or a stir when they do.

Music Comments: 3/4. Dance. Short piano prelude. Begins somewhat sadly (perhaps in reverence?) but ends triumphantly.

My best translation:
In the lands of Poland the laurels are not cut; the devil, even after supper, would tempt this need. An angel disguised as a titmouse- friend of glories without reproaches, a beautiful angel with a sharpened beak- defends the approach to these laurels. In the lands of Poland the laurels are not cut; the devil, even after supper, would tempt this need. Illustrating the vow of the heroes, the laurels are the sentinels, impregnable bushes of echos singing the faith of the faithful hearts. In the lands of Poland the laurels are not cut; the devil, even after supper, would tempt this need. Under the shadow of the laurels Lies the most solemn bed. Bed of the fervours, bed of the warrior, love is there with the brave ones.

Music Comments: A flowing French early 20th century style. Andantino quasi allegretto. 6/8 and 9/8. Tricky musically, even to getting the starting vocal pitch after the extended piano introduction.

My best take on a translation:
A forest of waves suddenly appears, and these waves are the past nights, waves of the future, cradles of the forests; the shadows are my fiancées. Sing, choir of my thoughts, in the forest of some futures. Dawns of winter, my fiancées: My laurels can only bloom. Tomorrow, I will gather, in the hour when the shadow is lengthened, the star, flower of my sighs, to my lips, covered in snow. And all the avenged coldnesses will have the heat of my arms. And all my dreamed loves will have the pallor of my forehead. And I will see the star of the tears extinguish on the intertwined branches of this green laurel, of which the flower shines on the lips of the fiancées.

Music Comments: Allegro moderato; musical theatre ballad.

Text Comments: [spoken] I wish to sing a song about a certain kind of guy. [sung] I ain't a readin' man, I ain't a thinkin' man, an eatin' drinkin' man When I can get it to eat and drink. I ain't the suffer kind, I ain't the rougher kind, I ain't the buffer kind, I'm just a happy go lucky gink. But one thing I have got, I got a extra sense. I know what guys is like. I know what makes 'em click. I know what makes 'em tick, and when a man's ok, I know it a mile away. [goes on to tell a story of meeting the purest kind of guy, a regular joe you can rely on, "a man who does what the others spout". A kind of fanfare for the common man, so to speak]

Music Comments: Marked moderately; basic pulse gets a bit slower in middle but piano part is much busier there. Despite the C#6, it seems to me the tessitura isn't outrageously high, although a soft A5 is required at the very end of the song. low A3 is mezzo piano. B#5 sustained at approximately mezzo forte level. Beginning and end are quiet and beautiful, middle more agitated but voice still maintains lyricism.

Text Comments: Here is home. Is peace. Is quiet. Here is love that sits by the hearth And smiles Into the fire, As into a memory of happiness As into the eyes of quiet. Here is faith that can be silent. It is not afraid of silence. It knows happiness is a deep pool of quiet. Here Sadness, too, is quiet. Is the earth's sadness On autumn afternoons When days grow short, And the year grows old, When frost is in the air, And suddenly one notices Time's hair has grown whiter. Here where is here? In my heart Within your heart Is home. Is peace. Is quiet.

Music Comments: quarter = 112 or slower; marked "Bright". piano introduction establishes swing pattern.

Text Comments: Radical Sally, She was always there, always there, no matter where, she was there. At Bradley's Bar (before it was a restaurant and it was just a bar), Radical Sally looking for a cause and we'd walk in And there she'd be staring like a dead tree at you at me especially you. And the Five Spot: Monk and Trane and Lady Day sittin' in (loud crowd hushed) And there in the gloom Radical Sally sippin' and grinnin' in the applause Grinnin' at something someone said. Maybe it was you. And in Elaine's When it was one room Sally was lurking. And wasn't it ninety-two The day they closed the Lion's Head, That one day? And we swung by the next day and there it was, open again And leaning on the bar, sipping margaritas with a look of I knew you when (when did she know?) And the day in Big Sur She was at Nepenthe You and me in Monterey She an abalone stand away Radical Sally! Give me a break! Radical Sally And she still looks at you like a long lost cause. Radical Sally. Radical Sally.
