Music Comments: "Slow and solemn". "pesante". dotted quarter = 48. Centers on E. Delicate yet majestic, with low E pedal and many open fifths. Very quiet. Around 0:45.

Text Comments: How does one summarize a haiku? It already is summarized to the essence of the thought! But, I'll try: this poem describes how a chestnut tree still keeps the ruins of a shrine sacred.

Music Comments: Marked "Andante grazioso". The refrain ("Because it is the day of Palms, Carry a palm for me, Carry a palm in Santa Chiara, And I will watch the sea.") hangs fairly high (Bb4-Ab5) and is alternately mezzo piano and piano, but the rest of the song has a lower tessitura. Lyrical, flowing, in both piano and voice.

Text Comments: Because it is the day of Palms, Carry a palm for me, Carry a palm in Santa Chiara, And I will watch the sea. I sit and watch the little sail lean sideways on the sea, The sea is blue from here to Sorrento And the sea wind comes to me. I se the white clouds lift from Sorrento And the dark sail lean upon the sea. Because it is the day of Palms, Carry a palm for me, Carry a palm in Santa Chiara, And I will watch the sea. I have grown tired of all these things. And what is left for me? I have no place in Santa Chiara, There is no place upon the sea. But carry a palm in Santa Chiara, Carry a palm for me.

Music Comments: half = 92, marked "Sprightly". Alternates between text declamation almost at tongue twister speed and a more lyrical, "serious" paean to papa's big toe. Very funny, accessible.

Text Comments: Papa has a pig. And a big pig too. Papa plays a piggy-toe that I can't do. O Papa has the biggest pig you ever did see. He gave only ten little piggies to me. Papa has the star of all the swine, Papa shines stern in the sty. Papa goes to market. And I stay home. Papa doesn't tickle his toes all alone. O Papa has the fattest pig you ever did feel. My ten little piglets just pinch and squeal. Papa has the star of all the swine, Papa shines stern in the sty. Papa has a pen. And a big pen too. Papa rides a piggy-back that I can't do. O Papa stands out in the pig-feet race. My ten little wiggles don't go any place. Papa has the star of all the swine. Shine, Papa, shine, shine, shine in the sty.

Music Comments: "Largo ed affettuoso" sixteenth = 69. A particularly beautiful song to my ear. Although there are phrases with a lower tessitura, the song as a whole seems to lie a bit higher than the other songs in the cycle.

Text Comments: Beginning of the text: "How beautiful they were, those old people--I mean father and mother--how simple, how clear, how untroubled." More.

Recordings: 4 recordings at Amazon.com. The one linked below is a special order at Amazon (there are two that are available for almost immediate shipping) but the one below is Janet Baker's recording and includes some RealAudio clips you can hear over the net.

Music Comments: to be added by composer in early '99

Text Comments: Beginning of text: "I belong here. I was born here. The palms sift their fingers and the men shove by in shirts, shaving in underwear shorts. They curse and scratch the wet hair in their armpits, and spit. Whores spread their delicate little germs, or, indifferently, don't."
