Frantzen, John

American composer (see songs) working primarily in English

John Frantzen, born and raised in Maquoketa, Iowa, studied trombone and instrumental music at Arizona State University receiving a bachelors degree in 1987. He has studied composition with John Heiss of the New England Conservatory and Randall Shinn. Mr. Frantzen has written works for orchestra, wind ensemble, chorus, percussion ensemble, flute choir, children's choir, tenor voice with piano, and brass quintet. He has received commissions from the Nashua (NH) Chamber Orchestra, Belmont (MA) High School Percussion Ensemble, Marshfield (MA), High School Concert Band, Frontier Regional School (MA) Wind Ensemble, and the South Shore Conservatory Flute Symphony.

Current projects include commissions from the Winn-Brook Elementary (MA) children's choir, the Bridgewater-Raynham (MA) High School Chorus, the Liverpool (NY) High School Symphonic Bands, and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Frantzen holds memberships in the American Music Center and the American Composers Forum. A member of the Boston Area Chapter of the American Composers Forum steeing commitee since 1998, his article on teaching was recently published in the February, 1999 issue of its national newsletter "Sounding Board." He has appeared as a guest conductor and composer with the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Symphony Band and the South Shore Conservatory Wind Ensemble.

Just recently his composition "Poem", for wind ensemble, was chosen as a finalist in the G.Schirmer 1999 Young American's Band Competition.

As a master Orff-Schulwerk teacher, Frantzen has been teaching classroom general music for the past 12 years. Currently he is a K-4 music instructor in Belmont, Massachusetts. During the summer of 1998 he was invited to lecture on the creative process in the Orff-Schulwerk at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. His work with children has received national attention via showings of projects in Long Island, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.

Mr. Frantzen's compositions have been performed in several states. This includes: Arizona, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Texas. Citing music influences as diverse as Aaron Copland, Carl Orff, and Orlando Lassus, Frantzen is establishing himself as a composer whose music demonstrates an innate boldness, immediacy of expession, and personal warmth.
