Laitman, Lori

American composer (see songs) working primarily in English

This entry contributed by G&K around 9/28/99

translated excerpt from the Dutch review of Lauren Wagner's cd in Phonogram Magazine, 1994:

Lori Laitman was specifically asked by Lauren Wagner to compose a song. She chose a text by Sara Teasdale and the CD is worth owning for this song alone: magnificent! Another "plus" to this production is that the source and full text of the songs are in the CD book.

[biography transferred to web site by GP; typos are my fault!]
Lori Laitman was graduated magna cum laude, with honors in music, from Yale College, and went on to receive her M.M. from the Yale School of Music. In 1991, Ms. Laitman was the featured American composer at Strathmore Hall in Maryland, and was a 1993 fellow at The Charles Ives Center for American Music. She is a recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Music Composition for 1995 and 1997, a grant from The Arts Council of Montgomery County for 1997-98, as well as a 1995 grant from Meet the Composer.

Ms. Laitman has focused on composing music for voice since 1991, and her vocal music has become standard repertoire at several universities. Recent performances across the country have taken place in such venues as The Skylight Opera Theatre (Wisconsin), Weill Recital Hall (NY), Shriver Hall (Baltimore), The Cleveland Institute of Art, The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (D.C.), and The Gilmore International Festival (Michigan).

Ms. Laitman's songs using the poetry of Sara Teasdale have been recorded by Lauren Wagner for Channel Classics Records and have received critical acclaim in Europe and the United States. One magazine wrote, "She chose a text by Sara Teasdale and the CD is worth owning for this song alone: magnificent!"

Ms. Laitman is currently recording a CD of her vocal music for Albany Records. Ms. Laitman's music is published by E.C. Schirmer, Theodore Presser and Arsis Press.
