Kilstofte, Mark

Mark Kilstofte (b. 1958) holds degrees from St. Olaf College and the University of Michigan, where he studied composition with Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom, Eugene Kurtz, George Balch Wilson and William Albright, and served as assistant conductor of the Contemporary Directions Ensemble. He is currently associate professor of composition and theory at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and continues to organize and direct performances of less frequently performed composers such as Hildegard and Gesualdo, as well as literature from the current century.

In recent years, his works have been commissioned and performed by such ensembles and performing organizations as Alea III, the Amadeus Choir, the Ambassador Duo, the Aurora Brass, the Montclaire String Quartet, Musica Nova, the New Renaissance Chamber Artists, the Newma Ensemble, the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the Tampa Bay Composers' Forum, Uncommon Practice and the Verona Brass Ensemble, and have been featured at such musical events as the XI World Saxophone Congress, BGSUís New Music and Art Festival, the Sixth International Festival of Brass, Imagine '96, the Festival at Sandpoint, and the Crane Festival of NEWMUSIC, among others.

Kilstofte's awards include grants and fellowships from the Copland Heritage Association, the MacDowell Colony, the Knight Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Metropolitan Arts Council, and the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. In addition to winning the ASCAP Foundation's 17th annual Rudolf Nissim Award, his music was also selected for inclusion in the National Orchestral Association's New Music Orchestral Project and received the West Virginia Symphony/Museum in the Community Composer's Award for String Quartet. His music is published by the Newmatic Press, Boelke-Bomart, Warner/Chappell and Kjos.
