Parkersburg, WV, 1947) has built an international reputation as a vocal coach-accompanist, conductor and composer. He has served on the faculties of several prestigious schools, including Boston University, the New England Conservatory, Rutgers University, the Mannes College of Music, the Hartt School of Music, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. As pianist, accompanist and master class clinician, he has toured throughout the United States, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Hess has conducted hundreds of performances of operas that encompass musical styles from the early Baroque to premiere performances of contemporary works. His numerous compositions include instrumental works and many individual songs and song cycles which have been lavishly praised in the press, including The New York Times. He has received many important commissions, and his songs are included in the repertoire of some of the finest artists of our time. Nottingham, England, Feb 2, 1946) has written the poems for two of Benton Hess' song cycles, Metamorphosis and Amours, as well as the libretto for Dennis Riley's Cantata V: Raggedstone Hill. He has published two chapbooks, The Infinite Etcetera and The Careless Days, and his poems and translations have appeared in The New Yorker, Salmagundi, The Advocate, and many other magazines. Hewitt teaches creative writing at the Harvey Milk Institute in San Francisco where he is also Senior Literary Editor of A & U Magazine.
