Cycle Comments:
All three volumes of the cycle include important notes, but the second volume has some comments particularly important for this cataloging: ". . . First, despite these songs' appearance in three slight volumes, it is my preference (rarely to be honored, I fear) that [the songs in this cycle] be performed as a totality. Second, this cycle was given its first complete solo performance by Richard Potter, a Washington, D.C. -based baritone, a staunch and stalwart supporter, who has earned my considerable gratitude. I was at the piano for that first performance--in New York City--followed by others in Washington and in London." Also, "Recordings of some of these songs are available by Christopher Trakas (MusicMasters), Carl Halvorsen (Musical Heritage Society) and Paul Sperry (Albany), and their pianists Steven Blier, Susan Almasi and Irma Vallecillo respectively." All three volumes include the note that one performer called the music a sort of "Rogers and Schoenberg" sound.
