Cycle or set: Mouvements du coeur

Cycle Comments: This cycle for bass voice and piano is unified by the poet rather than by a composer. The poet for all seven songs is Louise de Vilmorin, but the composers are Sauguet (songs 1 & 7), Poulenc (2), Auric (3), Françaix (4), Preger (5), and Milhaud (6). The set is in memory to Chopin and was written in 1949 on the 100th anniversary of his death. The poetry appears to have been written for the purpose (as opposed to having been selected from an already existant body of work) and refers, particularly clearly in the last song, directly to Chopin. The poet seems to love word play, and my translations do not show many of the clever and beautiful word choices employed in the French. The music uses piano forms that Chopin favored in his compositions, such as Mazurka, Waltz, and Polonaise. It was commissioned by French bass Doda Conrad, who also commissioned Ned Rorem's Flight for Heaven and a few other works that I forget.
