Cycle Comments:
Written in 1984-1987 to a variety of writers, including the composer's mother, this cycle is powerful, beautiful, and bittersweet (with an emphasis on the bitter). It was premiered by soprano Carol Chickering and pianist Robert Kopelson at CAMI Hall in New York City on April 29, 1988. Dedicated to Ned Rorem, on his 63rd birthday.
