Review:
 * * * *  A wonderful index arranged by composer. Many lesser-known American composers. Lists songs' range, timed length, voice type, publisher, and discography. Also indexed by first line and title and by poet, but unfortunately not by voice type. Nevertheless an excellent resource for relatively unknown repertoire.

 * * * * *  Includes important regional variants, uses IPA. Castel is the diction expert for most languages at the Met, and Spanish is his native language, I believe.

Review:
brief review v04.n003: BUT, I have recently acquired an incredible book that addresses many of these vocal issues. It is called "The Singer's Notebook" and it is written by Anthony Frisell (Some of his previous books are mentioned in the archives). Frisell writes about different "Vocal Zones" that every voice has in addition to the "break" from head to chest voice. These zones are divided into two groups - one group encompasses the notes C-E and the other group encompasses the notes F-B. The easiest notes to sing are the tones in the middle of each zone. The border tones are the hardest. If a singer has a three-octave range, then he or she is passing through at least six vocal zones (different octaves of C-E and F-B). This, perhaps, can account for why a high C can be so different from a high B. I will write more about "The Singer's Notebook" when I have time. Mitchell Weitz made several posts to the vocalist that can be found in the archives detailing how to find a copy of the book. I highly recommend it for all the singers out there who have determined that the vocal registers play an important part in their singing.

v04.n768: "You might read some of the works of Alfred Tomatis and Paul Madaule(former student of Tomatis and clinician). Tomatis's basic theory is that you cannot make a sound vocally that you cannot hear. And singers _can_ develop an increasing sensitivity to particular frequencies and, thus, learn to produce new overtones, merely by training themselves to hear them....]
