v03.n186: I do not own a copy, and do not recall the publisher. But they had it at
TOWER BOOKS in Manhattan, which means probably all the major booksellers with
branches of decent selections will carry it.
Readers of the NATS Journal might find many chapters hauntingly familiar.
Richard Miller contributes his monthly column, and many chapters in his new
tome are drawn directly from his storehouse of column essays.
I find him an excellent writer, and a thoughtful researcher.
His bias against non-Western classical music and non-classical Western music
is evident, but the essays I skimmed in the early chapters seemed toned down
in their bias. That is to say, he said more research needs to be made.
Vocalist members will find his breadth and depth of knowledge impressive.
And his vocabulary, too! He uses vocal terminology and musical terms from
French, Italian, and German schools of pedagogy as easily as he uses
technical anatomical descriptions of vocal physiology.
Each of the essays can be read separately. But he has grouped them into
general topic headings (technique, career, etc).
I find his essays particularly interesting because he investigates and
illuminates differences between vocal pedagogs by taking deep looks at their
vocabularly, conceptual models (tonal ideals and such) as well as thephysiology.

On Wings of Song is dark science fiction about pursuing dreams, about a bleak future of opression and poverty, about the magic of being an outcast, and about singing. Disch is an excellent writer, and the engaging, comfortable pace belies the fact that the story is hard and thoughtful. The protagonist lives in a world in which, aided by technology, singing can literally free one's soul to fly anywhere, leaving a husk behind that can be reinhabited later if the soul wishes and if the body has not stopped working. Flying is a skill and art that many think is immoral and that not everyone can master. Singing an aria, an art song, or a popular song can bring a person to fly as long as the performer has the perfect intellectual balance between the music and the words. The protagonist, a young man from the oppressive nation-state of Iowa, sets it as his goal to learn to fly. The pursuit of his dream brings him both wild success and complete failure.
