History Through the Opera Glass: From the Rise of Caesar to the Fall of Napoleon'

This entry contributed by Julia Watkins-Davis around 5/5/99

Review:
 * * * * *  Jellinek provides the reader with a well-researched and rather thorough discussion of history surrounding many opera characters; from neo-Roman figures to Tudor England's Anna Boleyn to the French Revolution, Jellinek covers a lot of territory with style and detail. Gratefully, Jellinek does not remain confined to Western European history, but includes Asia Minor, the New World to some extent and some Russian history as well. In the appendix, there is an excellent Chronology with listings of representative operas on historical subjects. This is an excellent resource for singers doing thorough research into the lives and historical environments of their characters.
