News Archive: Page 9 of 271/28/99: Site NewsI added a link to the Lieder-L archive on the art song page and added a link to Shirlee Emmons' site on the singing page. I've spent web time promoting the site, submitting links, contacting potential sources, and building the reviews in the bibliography database from Vocalist. 1/26/99: Site NewsI found a site on composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, who had been recommended to me by Christopher Berg, and am talking with the people there about the possibility of getting his songs in the catalog. I also re-found a site of an unusual publisher called Sikesdi Press, and am seeing if they would be interested in adding any of their vocal music to the catalog. We already have one piece from them, Sonnet 1 from Willowwood by Arthur Fickénscher, which you can find in our catalog. Otherwise reestablishing contact with a variety of sources. I added Sikesdi to the list of publishers and consolidated the list of publishers to the Music page, taking them off the Singing page. I also added Lexical FreeNet to the Symbolism section of the Singing page. 1/25/99: Site UpdateOK, here is Mouvements du coeur, an unusual cycle for low voice (pretty much bass rather than mezzo or contralto) and piano. It is one of the few cycles not in English and not written in the past 30 years in the catalog so far. The translations I put in for the French are very much works in progress, but hopefully it will give an idea of what the texts are all about. I probably ought to mention that this year is the 50th anniversary of the composition of this cycle; the 150th anniversary of Chopin's death, whom the cycle commemorates; and the 100th anniversary of Poulenc's birth (I think), who wrote one of the songs in the cycle. We are off tour for a week starting tonight. I actually had this update ready last Wednesday but none of the places we were in had a local dial-up number for Earthlink and I didn't feel like spending the $5 for an hour's upload over the 1-800 number. I spend enough money on this thing as it is! I'm going to show this site to accompanist extraordinaire Margo Garrett this week and see if I can get her interested, either through promotion to her singers or through recommending new composers to contact. I'll also try to work this week on the three-month-old project of adding Vocalist reviews to all of the books in the bibliography, and maybe getting some of the vocal training texts sent to me without reviews into the bibliography. In whatever time I have of course... I linked 100 or so folks in the song catalog to a bio on the web. Also took care of some emails to composers, publishers, and the like. I need to send out a newsletter, but not as much as usual has happened over the holiday season, so it will be a small one. Song Catalog

1/19/99: Frank E. Warren Chamber Music CompetitionFor this short tour we are on I didn't bring enough to do on the site to make much progress. I'll have an odd set for bass up soon, Mouvements du coeur, since I brought that along for my own recital preparation. Meanwhile I have two other pieces of news. First, I received my second award for the site, the Artvive Four Star web award for excellence in content and page design. This award is new, and is for performing arts sites only. The awards page should have an image soon. Woohoo! Second, for composers, Frank Warren asked me to post the following notice: The 1999 International Chamber Music Composition Competition sponsored by New England Reed Trio, in collaboration with Frank E. Warren Music Service and Note Perfect Musical Services of Pekin, IL, announces their fifth annual composition competition. The ensemble is seeking compositions that feature the core ensemble. All entries must utilize a minimum of two performers from the grouping of: ob., cl., bsn. Up to two (2) additional instrumentalists may be included (standard woodwind quintets NOT eligible). Music for solo voice with accompaniment (as above) is also encouraged. Postmark deadline for all entries is 27 March 1999. There is an administration fee of $15.00 for United States composers and $20.00 for international entries. First prize $300 US, performance & publication; second prize: performance & publication; third prize: publication. Prize winning compositions published by Frank E. Warren Music Service will be computer engraved by Note Perfect Musical Services. Application form required. For more information and/or application, contact: Frank E. Warren Music I hope everyone is doing well! A new newsletter should come out soon, I think.... My computer time has been taken up lately by a game that is much too fun for my own good, Baldur's Gate. If you like computer role playing games, check it out--but it is a time drain, I'm afraid.
