2/15/99: REC Music Foundation Grant for RealAudio clips

Happy Lincoln's Birthday, Valentine's Day, and President's Day!  Although I have not posted for more than a week, a great deal has gone on behind the scenes.

The most exciting news is that we have gotten a grant from the REC Music Foundation to obtain the equipment needed to add RealAudio clips to songs in the song catalog (download player here)!   If a song interests you but you don't know what the composer's style is, you will be able to listen to a clip of some of his or her songs, maybe even of the song you are interested in!  I, as well as the REC Music Foundation, want you to have enough information to be willing to go out on a limb and try a new composer's work.  I am very excited about the new possibilities and appreciative of the opportunity to increase the functionality of the site.  Hopefully song clips will begin appearing at the beginning of March.

Other news items are a number of additions to the bibliography, catalog, and link lists.  Two books, one a singing technique book used at the Spoleto festival and one an annotated singing bibliography that is apparently smaller but more thorough in its reviews than the one at this site, are now in the catalog.  Three song cycles by Daron Hagen were contributed by Carl Fischer to the catalog but I've only had time to add basic notes for two on-line: Muldoon Songs (high baritone or tenor and piano) and Three Silent Things (soprano and piano quartet).  The other will be in by next weekend.  And I've added a link on the opera page to another opera site that was submitted to me.

That's the news for now.  Have a great day!

2/5/99: Site Update

We have had a day or two free in preparation for a performance and so we've taken advantage of it.  Karyn has been learning knitting with my grandmother so my own companionable activity has been to work on the site a bit.

Two months ago a site visitor sent me a list of over 100 books, many within the vocal training category.   In addition to my being very busy over the past few months, the size of the classical vocal training category was making a page that could take almost a minute to load--I was worried about making the page even bigger.  However, I figured out a solution this week and have added almost all of the new books.  Unfortunately there are virtually no reviews yet for these books.  In any case the books bring the bibliography count up to over 750 books.  The new books are mostly in the various vocal training sections.

The bibliography has changed so that the category lists link to the full information for each book, rather than containing the information themselves.  This brings the size of the category lists down considerably, although the bibliography's title index and the author index are still both pretty big documents.  Two new categories in the bibliography, Classical Vocal Training (1900-1949) and Non English Language Classical Vocal Training, also divide up the books a little more.

The rate of vistiors to the site have doubled again in the past couple of weeks.  Interesting site statistics (to me at least!): the top nine bibliography pages from ninth place to first are Poetry, Anthologies in the Catalog, Translations in English, Voice Classification, Opera Resources, Audition Preparation, Diction, Pop Vocal Training, Classical Vocal Training.  The art song catalog is a bit more popular than the bibliography.  The most used links pages are the Opera and the Singing pages.  The newsletter has subscribers from America (surprise!), Canada, Europe, and even on the other hemisphere of the globe.  And 27% of the users of the site are named "Cecilia."  No, just kidding about the last one.

We rehease a Marriage of Figaro tomorrow with orchestra, then perform it Sunday.

1/31/99: Site News

A visual change to the site's header and footer will hopefully clarify to the casual visitor the importance of the bibliography ("Books" above) and the art song catalog ("Catalog" above).   Hopefully this news page will not be completely lost because of the change.   Other developments still too early to announce....  Meanwhile I'm trying to get Magnifico in my head along with the Mouvements du Coeur cycle.

1/29/99: Site News

I republished the database today because I've added some Vocalist reviews--so, no new items, but Vocalist reviews for those that have 'em for over half the items in the bibliography.   Now back to working on music.
