News Archive: Page 4 of 279/16/99: Back from Summer Break!
Welcome back! While Karyn's and my summers have been very busy you can see already that I've made some significant changes to the site in my 'spare time.' These changes include the following:
- a new section called Links that houses the Music, Singing, Opera, and Art Song pages (and will house a soon-to-be-unveiled oratorio page too)
- a new layout for the home page and news archive pages with highlights you can personalize via...
- ...a new customization section
- new ease-of-use features for the song and book addition and review pages
- a new, much more powerful, and much more reliable, search page
- a new song search page
- a new chat system (to which I will eventually transfer the threads from the old chat board)
- a new welcome page separate from the home page
- a new layout for the header and footer of each page (that hopefully further clarifies the site organization)
- a large help section with frequently asked questions (FAQ) and their answers
- a slightly new site look for all users, and a bigger change for Netscape users (all of which is the product of an attempt to accommodate users with dimmer screens, users with only 256 colors, and users with different browsers)
- an automated news archival system (this is on my end; basically all it means is that I will have to spend less time on the weekly site upkeep)
- lots of technological changes signifying my re-embracing of some web site technologies (like CSS and CGI), my new understanding of others (like DHTML, JavaScript, and Perl), and my rejection of FrontPage 2000 in favor of Allaire HomeSite as my web page editor.
- and lots of little changes that I couldn't even bore you with if I wanted to because I've forgotten most of them!
One thing that wasn't in the above list of changes was huge additions to the song catalog and bibliography. I've added a few, as you can see below (in what will be a new standard--and automated--layout, by the way), but my main goal was to update the site content, technology, and layout both for your sake and mine.
I have over 200 songs waiting to be added to the catalog, as well as numerous audio clips. The songs by Dan Locklair, Malcolm Forsyth, and other composers mentioned at the start of the summer break will now be added gradually...as will the new songs we have received from Lori Laitman, John Greer, and others. More composers are calling, so I better stop designing and start cataloging! Those additions are what I will be spending my web site time on in the coming weeks.
Personally, Karyn and I have moved into our new apartment in New York City. Yup. Here we are in the Big Apple. We're excited and a bit nervous--we are eager to have lessons, to audition for whatever gigs seem conceivably ours, and to find a way to pay the bills! We hope you had a good summer, we hope you have a good audition season (if that is on your calendar this year), and we hope you enjoy our new season of daringdiva.com!

[click for top of page] 5/21/99: Site Update
This begins our summer break! Our weekly updates will be temporarily suspended until mid-September, although it is possible we may have a few big summer updates.
In this, our last regularly scheduled update for the season, we've got a bunch of new songs in the catalog and even more great additions on the horizon. Bringing our catalog to 535 songs, we've got all of the published (and rental) John Musto songs in the catalog this week thanks to Peermusic Classical. The future holds even more fun.
We've received about 10 audio clips from Mark Scearce which will be added to the catalog by our September update, along with his song cycle 35@35. Even more exciting, thanks to Ricordi Canada, we have received over 30 scores for inclusion in the catalog, including songs by Canadians Malcolm Forsyth (a highly-decorated composer), Victor Davies, Keith Bissell, Harry Freedman, Godfrey Ridout, and Normon Symonds; by Americans Dan Locklair (bio also here), Vaclav Nelhybel, Joseh Frank Poůhe, and Luigi Zaninelli; and by other well-known composers György Kurtág, John Rutter, and Edgar Varese. Several of these pieces will have audio clips as well. Finally, we received a tape from the African-American Art Song Alliance of some songs by Leslie Adams (more info here). I will be trying to arrange a connection with Edward B. Marks for the promotion of some of the many songs by Africican-American composers in their catalog.
If you would like an email informing you when updates have resumed then please subscribe to our newsletter. In preparation for the summer hiatus I also cleaned out the old news from this page again; look here for the old news. Why are we having a summer break, you may ask? Well, because we will have very limited net access and possibly very limited computer access for the summer because of our summer plans (which include a protracted move). As I said, we may have a couple of updates this summer if I can manage it, but I can't guarantee it. Have a great three months!
Note
I have had trouble uploading the full site update to our server, which means that most of the Musto songs were unavailable. They should now be available, although the search page will be broken indefinitely.

Some great additions, bringing the song catalog to over 500 songs and the bibliography to 825 items. We have all the solo vocal songs from the new Boosey & Hawkes The Marc Blitzstein Songbook in the catalog, we've got a cycle of John Musto in the cycle (Recuerdo; more of his songs and cycles coming!)...and we've got new bibliography stuff. Namely, we've got a review of the Kutsch and Riemens dictionary of late nineteenth and early twentieth singers (a standard for collectors of early opera recordings), a new entry for History Through the Opera Glass, information on the Musical Behavior Scale (actually a web site but it's in the bibliography under Music Psychology), a few other books...and some links. Namely, (all on the art song page) we have mezzo Sarah Walker's wonderful official site, an unofficial site for soprano Dawn Upshaw, and a great site on the composer Marc Blitzstein.
A bit more Musto and Scearce are in the immediate future...then we'll have all of the published Musto and all of the Scearce in the catalog! And I still need to change the message board to one that doesn't have ads on it...sometime! I'm going to try out the new Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and see if I like it. Meanwhile we are preparing to move, doing a few last shows (L'Enfant and Cenerentola), and working on music for various projects. I modified my Glimmerglass recital program a bit too; you can see it here if you like. Have a great week!

Whoa! I've been busy. Performing Cenerentola, preparing the Benton Hess song cycle (that I mentioned last week, below) for publication, practicing, planning, ... Wow! Which is a long way of saying that there's only a little news this week.
Basically, I sent out a new newsletter (today) and I added some links. You can view the newsletter archive here or subscribe for future newsletters here. The links include Soprano Central (Singing page), a treasure trove of info on a lot of sopranos and a few mezzos; the Earl Okin Record Resource (Singing page), a resource on historical singers particularly of interest to 78 collectors; a neat collection of Poet links (Art song page), all for English 20th century poets; and another Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau site (Art song page), interesting (I think!) if you read German.
Upcoming site excitements include a review of the classic record and historical resource by Kutsch and Riemens (which I've actually already received but I didn't have time to upload the whole bibliography this week just for one review). Also the following should be winging their way to me even as I write: the newly released Marc Blitzstein anthology (available now from Classical Vocal Repertoire and other sources), anthologies and songs by Musto, Locklair, Forsyth, Davies, et al, and a few other recordings of various composers including Locklair and Vores.
Have a great week!
