9/18/98: Blitzstein and Hundley anthology news

First off, since this page is called "News," how about some actual news.   For Marc Blitzstein fans out there, Glendower Jones of Classical Vocal Reprints informed me today that Boosey & Hawkes is preparing an edition of some of his songs for publication.  For those singers who don't know Blitzstein's songs, run out and go listen to William Sharp, Karen Holvik, and Steven Blier on the Koch cd Marc Blitzstein: Zipperfly & other songs (that link will take you to amazon.com, where you can hear a few tracks, and buy it there if you wish).  Also, Glendower told me that a new collection of Richard Hundley songs will be coming out soon from Boosey & Hawkes.  (Hundley songs you might be familiar with include "Waterbird," "Sweet Suffolk Owl," "Come Ready and See Me," etc.)  Finally, he gave me some info on trying to obtain Aaron Kernis songs (I love his orchestral music, but have only heard one of his Stein x Seven songs on a Jan deGaetani disc), John Musto songs, and Richard Pearson Thomas songs.   Thank you!

For site news, we won our first award!  Check it out on the Awards and Web Rings page.

Personally, now that I'm at least partly back to work, getting web site stuff done is more difficult--the Mark Scearce songs may need to wait until the weekend, and I will need to make some calls to some composers and emails to some publishers.

9/17/98: Site News

I'm making a few cosmetic changes to some pages and making some of the vocal rep pages in the Singer's Bibliography link to Amazon.com.   I will try to input a few more of Mark Scearce's songs (from the Back by the Roadside cycle) into the song catalog, and then probably call it a day.  My back is doing much better, thank goodness, and I'll be returning to rehearsal for Figaro tomorrow, at least to watch.  This means less constant updates for the site, but additions to the bibliography and the song catalog will continue to arrive.

Today and yesterday have been exciting to watch as about 100 site visitors have come by for a look, some of you leaving nice notes in email or in the Classical Singer forum.  It will be interesting to see how the traffic numbers settle once everyone has come by to give the site a chance.  Please comment, please contribute!  :-)

9/16/98: Site News

I'm going to have to start a new news page soon.  I've been in touch with a lot of people because of the web site--thanks to everyone for your positive feedback!  I'm continuing to try and publicize the site as well, joining the Voice Studio webring etc.   I talked with Glendower Jones of Classical Vocal Reprints (see Catalogs for his info) and he is going to send me some of his catalog to be entered into the database: works of Christopher Berg, Lee Hoiby, Steven Mark Kohn, and maybe some others.

9/15/98: The site is born!

I announced the web site to a bunch of our friends today, and began submitting the site to search engines and music sites.  Hi everyone!

Also, a friend of mine told me the name of another composer whose name I had forgotten: Hub Miller.

As a final matter of interest, I found a web site that humbled my aspirations for this art song catalog.  Check out the Art Song page, and you will see a link to a British Song Database of around 5,700 songs.  Heavens.
