News Archive: Page 21 of 279/26/98: Site UpdateFirst off, obviously, I started a new news page. The old one was getting too long for my taste. If you want to catch up on old site news (and one or two very small, occasional bits of real singing news) feel free to explore the links on the left. Second, with the addition of some more Mark Scearce songs and some Ernst Bacon songs from Classical Vocal Reprints, the catalog is up to about 24 songs. I've decided I need to deal with the problem of anthologies more clearly in the index, so I am going to revise the catalog to include more specific anthology information. Most obviously, that will involve creating an anthology index, in which one can view what songs are in a given anthology. I will begin work on that today, but that is a somewhat lower priority than some other tasks like actually entering some more songs. Like the catalog, the new mailing list is growing slowly but steadily. If you have not yet joined, please check it out and consider joining--it is a great way of getting updates on new songs, books, or links that have been added to our site. Thank you for visiting, and come back soon! We have a lot of songs coming up on the catalog soon, and links to Amazon.com and Classical Vocal Reprints in the Singer's Bibliography will continue to be added gradually. And don't forget to contribute! Song Catalog
BibliographyNo new bibliography items 9/24/98: Site UpdateI'm busy as heck. Changed a bit of the bibliography to reflect some books that Glendower Jones told me he regularly keeps in stock; he mentioned some books not in the bibliography, but I didn't have time to search for the details elsewhere. Maybe this weekend. I've entered the Mark Scearce songs in the song database here, but I have not yet downloaded the info to the site yet. I'm trying to get started on the songs from Glendower mentioned yesterday, but my poor piano skills leave me somewhat at a loss. . . I'll do my best! And finally, the mailing list, one day old, has already gotten some members! Please join! Song Catalog
BibliographyNo new bibliography items 9/23/98: Site NewsWell, lots of site news! First of all, we've got lots of new songs to be put in the site. Glendower Jones of Classical Vocal Reprints contributed around 90 songs by Ernst Bacon, Christopher Berg, Steven Mark Kohn, and Lee Hoiby. They look great! And Richard Pearson Thomas and I are corresponding via email also: he has about 90 songs himself, all of which we are planning to enter in the catalog. The catalog may be nearing a rather respectable 200 songs in the relatively near future! My guess is that it will take about a month to get all of these songs in the catalog, since I have to do a lot of the entries myself, but you should see the songs gradually showing up over the next few weeks. The other site news is that I've added a mailing list for the site. This means that, if you want to be informed whenever new songs, books, or links are added to the site, you just add your email address to our the list! Please join! We are getting a lot of first time visitors and a lot of nice comments, but I want a way to get people to come back! The long-promised Mark Scearce songs will be added soon. Heh-heh. Yeah, the check's in the mail, no, really... :-) I've played through the six songs and am ready to give them a quick write up, but this site takes a lot of time, even for some things you wouldn't think of. Finally, in the world of links, I have added one category and am trying to reorganize another. After some nice correspondence with Cherry Duke, I discovered I should add a new category: Web Page Résumé Builders for Classical Singers. Cherry's is the first listing; check it out! And I am trying to reorganize the Publishers and Catalogs sections, both to incorporate some new links from Glendower Jones and to clarify that some catalogs are for purchasing, and some just for perusing. That will happen gradually also. 9/21/98: Site NewsOver the weekend I contacted Richard Pearson Thomas, a song composer in New York City who currently sells his own songs. We are trying to arrange for his songs to be added to the song catalog. I also made an effort to contact Jake Heggie, but I don't know yet if I was successful. The song catalog is in stasis until I have some more contributors. The Mark Scearce songs I mentioned below are not yet in the catalog because the composer needs to clarify how he wants interested singers to obtain them, and because I need to play through them before I can write something halfway intelligent about the music. I started thinking about putting together some more complete competition and young artist program links, but by and large these sites are pitifully old, often providing information about auditions and schedules a year or two old. If folks still feel a list of those links might come in handy, tell me.
