News Archive: Page 2 of 2711/8/99: Davide Zanzoni and Stephen Salters
A few songs are in the database, but I need a bit more time to get everything done to update the site...and we are going tonight to see Stephen Salters' recital! If you are in New York, a number of performances might be interesting for you to attend this week. Here is an excerpt from an announcement from composer Davide Zanzoni.
My mini opera buffa, "Blind Date with Alter Egos", commissioned and
premiered by NYFOS a few years ago, will be staged by the CoOPERAtive.
Three performances at the West Side Y (63 and CPW). Thursday Nov 11 and
Saturday the 13 (8 pm) and Sunday Nov 14 (3 pm). Tickets $12. It is a
VERY short opera, and it tells the story of a guy and a girl having a
blind date, while their alter egos express their REAL feelings.
Also on Nov 14 at 2 pm (I am experiencing the rare luxury of two
simultaneous performances in Manhattan) , a performance of "In the
Distant Quiet", for voice and piano, on poems by Perry Brass. A
different work, more lyrical and meditative. The concert will be at Wave
Hill, the wonderful museum/garden (former residence of Mark Twain and
Toscanini) overlooking the Hudson in Riverdale. Jessica Gould, soprano,
and Mimi Stern Wolfe, piano. To get there, #1 train to 231 St and then
#7 bus to Wave Hill. It should take about an hour. Tickets $ 4.
Reservations (718) 549-3200 ext 308.
And, of course, don't forget the Stephen Salters recital we are going to tonight! See the link in Headlines on the left for more information.
Hopefully some new songs and such will be up by Wednesday morning. Have a great week!

Finding free time is like pulling teeth these days! Nonetheless, we have some great songs, as usual, added to the catalog. John Greer's very silly songs are quite wonderful for soprano or lyric mezzo (if you click on the links ending with ".ram" you can listen to them from another site!). The three French Forsyth songs look like an attractive set for mezzo or (at least for songs 1 and 3) baritone. And the three Frost settings by John Frantzen were premiered at a concert I attended this summer at Glimmerglass Opera. I, and the rest of the audience, I think, found them very enjoyable! Finally, we also received one intriguing-sounding song by Paul Barsom from the on-line form--hopefully more songs by this composer will show up soon. Among the many things definitely coming soon are recordings of the Frantzen songs, new listings of David Wolfson songs, more Lori Laitman, more Malcolm Forsyth, more recordings, more excellent Canadian and American composers whose names escape me at the moment because I'm so tired...more, more, and more. Have a great week, and see you at the top of the next one. Perhaps I'll send out a newsletter...it's about that time again. Join the newsletter if you like, using the link in the top menu...or pick another link up there and start a discussion in the chat board.

This past weekend was Karyn's performance of La Cenerentola with Taconic Opera. We were gone for most of the weekend, so there was no time to update the site. Next Monday (cross our collective toes) it will be up. We hope you have had a chance to look at some of the newest song entries in the catalog. There are some really good pieces, and lots more coming soon. Have a good week and a Happy Halloween!

This week brings great songs by American Lori Laitman and Canadians Malcolm Forsyth and Jeff Ryan. We also have an update to previously entered songs by Robert Jordahl. Enjoy!
Because of scheduling changes, the site updates will now occur every Monday or Tuesday, rather than Thursday.
We have received the editor's choice award in our category from 4anything.com, which joins our editorial award at Excite.com, our surfer's pick at Yahoo, and other distinctions. Thanks to 4anything.com!
