News Archive: Page 16 of 2711/8/98: Hatstand Opera Murder!
Well, we are back from tour! Thank goodness! I still don't have much time
though--more tomorrow. Meanwhile, two bits of news. First, the new automated Singers' Bibliography is up! It still has a few
glitches, I think, but I wanted to go ahead and get it up. I'll point out the new
features later. You can go ahead and explore it now.
Second, I got an email from Kirsty Young, the director of Hatstand Opera. Perhaps
some of you can help her out:
- I am planning a performance entitled 'Opera can be Murder', opera's goriest moments
investigated by a famous 'detective'. I am asking singers and producers all over the world
via the Internet to suggest their top three murderous moments. All contributions
gratefully received! (The murder needn't be a mystery; you nearly always know in
opera 'whodunnit' anyway, because the inspector is more investigating opera's obsession
with the whole thing.)
The response so far has been great; why not join in creating the first production I know
planned over the Net!
Kirsty Young, Director Hatstand Opera (hatstand@dircon.co.uk)
So, email away!

[click for top of page] 11/1/98: Site Update
We are in the middle of the last really heinous part of tour--two shows in a row (after
we are already utterly exhausted) followed by two days of 14-hour driving and then two
hours of driving before set up and performance of another show. A few people have
had to leave tour because of health and family problems, including the other Figaro
(leaving only me) and the other Cherubino (leaving only Karyn, but a back-up batter has
been brought in). So my apologies for the slow updates, but hopefully they will
return to a decent schedule once we are on a decent schedule!
Meanwhile, I continue to enter books in the automated bibliography database. Up
to over 400 now, and probably about 150 to go. Then a bit of debugging, and then
I'll put it up on the site!
I have added one link to the opera section: a web page with
advice to young artists from a pro who has been through Glimmerglass and Merola, and is
now living in Rome and doing gigs in Europe and the States. I really enjoyed
perusing the site; maybe you will too!
Sam Farrell of the Ernst Bacon Society also
contacted me about our site. I've put his site up in the song catalog already (it
will be posted next time I publish the database), but I think I'll put it up on the Art Song page too. They actually have not catalogued Bacon's
art songs on their site yet but they still have a lot of worthwhile information about this
American composer (1898-1990: centennial this year!).
Off to sleep for us!

We sang some master classes with Phyllis Curtin yesterday and today. They went
fine. Ms. Curtin is extremely nice. I used the opportunity to get an audience
for a new audition aria, Osmin's "O wie will ich triumphieren". Auditions
are coming up soon!
In other company news, the other Figaro in our company has badly injured one of his
legs, and will be unable to perform for the rest of tour--which, selfishly, means a
potentially very bad situation for me, with several Figaros hot on the heels of one
another. But, better in my shoes than his. I hope he gets better soon.
The new, not-yet-unveiled automated bibliography now has about 130 or 140 books in
it--probably about a third or half the final number once I transfer all the info from the
current incarnation into the new one. I have a few other ideas I may implement into
the bibliography as well. And I'll work on the newsletter a bit tonight.
Finally, I got a nice email from someone who wanted to link to this site. She has
a site herself; I am going to check it out to decide where to list the link to her pages.
You can visit it before me though: click here!
