The song catalog jumped to over 200 songs this weekend
because Welsh composer Andy Vores contributed all of the basic information for all of his
song cycles on Saturday. The composer has received numerous awards for his
composition and has had singers such as Sanford Sylvan, Dawn Upshaw, and Sarah Walker
perform his works. Most of the entries currently contain the full text of the song
but no song comments. Andy Vores will be gradually filling out the entries with song
comments, anthology prices, etc. over time. The texts look great, and the composer's
biography is very impressive. Please look at the catalog!
We are running out of space on this free web space at Earthlink so I have been
exploring other options. We may be moving our address, and I also have been toying
with the idea of actually shelling out some dough to get our own domain name (e.g.,
www.daringdiva.com). A lot of money, though, for both items, at least for people on
our budget. We'll see.
I added two books to the Singers' Bibliography: an
oratorio reference and a bel canto opera reference. Look in the sacred music
repertoire listing or the history section for the oratorio book, and in the opera section
or the history section for the bel canto book. In other bibliography news, I am
still making small strides in adding VocaList reviews and Amazon prices and features.
It will take a while.
Yahoo! sent me a note that they had finally added the site to their listings.
Should be up on the Yahoo singing page and in the search index in three or four
days. It took over two months! I know they are swamped, though.
OK, there might be some more news but I can't think of it and I need to go to bed.
G'night!

Lots of news to report. First, Christopher Berg sent me some more information
about the Dec. 6 Sorabji concert at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC. It starts at 7:30
p.m. Tickets are $20, or $10 for students/seniors, and are available at the Merkin
box office or phone (212)501-3330. "It appears the New Yorker is planning to
give us a listing, so perhaps early purchase is advisable." Here is the
program:
- INTERLUDE (1922) for piano
- (C. Berg at said instrument)
- PIANO QUINTET No. 1 (1920) World Premiere
- Berg, piano; Marshall Coid and Lilit Gampel, violins; David Cerutti, viola;
- Christine Gummere, cello (approx 25 mins.)
- TROIS FÊTES GALANTES DE VERLAINE (1919) (approx. 10 mins.)
- Felicity La Fortune, soprano; Berg, piano
- songs: l. L'Allée 2. A la promenade 3. Dans la grotte
- PIANO SONATA No. 2 (1920)
- Tellef Johnson, piano (approx. 45 mins)
- CAPRICIOUS CAPRICE ON THE "MINUTE" WALTZ OF CHOPIN (1933)
- Michael Habermann, piano (approx. 4 minutes)

- followed by panel discussion
Sounds great!
Next, Andy Vores, a Boston composer whom Will Graham had recommended, contacted me and
said he would be interested in helping me add his songs to the catalog. Fantastic!
I'll report on how that proceeds as it happens.
Also, Glendower Jones of Classical Vocal
Reprints helped me with some information on Daron Aric Hagen and then I actually found
Hagen's web site. I wrote him about
inclusion in the song catalog and he was complimentary and very interested. He gave
me the names of his editors to get promo copies and I will contact them later today.
So, another step forward.
A site visitor emailed me and suggested some improvements to the Singers' Bibliography: a more thorough listing of the
original VocaList reviews of each book and a note of the number of pages for each book.
I am in the process of acting on her suggestions, as well as doing a more thorough
job on reporting the price, the speed with which Amazon can ship an item, and the presence
of book reviews connected with the Amazon listing. The site visitor also offered to
add some bibliographical listings, but over a fax, so I need to get the opera office's fax
number...
I finally sat down and really looked at the new, fully operational Classical Vocal Reprints site. I was
very impressed, and really feel they have done an excellent job, particularly with their
implementation of their on-line catalog. It's easy to browse, and easy to find a
specific item. Kudos to CVR and to their webmaster, Eric of Lockjaw Webpublishing
Associates.
Finally, I'm making progress in getting in touch with Chicago composers George Flynn
and John Eaton, thanks to some very nice people in the DePaul and Chicago University music
departments.
On a personal note, Karyn got some Zithromax herself today; we should be getting soon,
maybe in time for a Sunday concert in which we both are supposed to sing an aria.

Went to the doctor, got some Zithromax, should be better soon. Karyn is feeling
sick also, though.
I mailed out a new newsletter. You can subscribe yourself here (please do!), or see the contents of past
newsletters here.
By the way, if you are going to be in New York City on December 6, Christopher Berg is
part of a performance of works by Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892-1988) in Merkin Concert
Hall. The recital includes some settings of Verlaine, and Sorabji's music is highly
recommended by Berg. Give it a listen! We may get these Sorabji songs in the
song catalog eventually.
Glendower Jones of Classical Vocal Reprints
emailed me about yesterday's query into Daron Hagen. ECS Publishing has him signed,
and three song cycles of his are out: Echo's songs, Love Songs and Dear Youth (Sop, Flute,
pno). Glendower has all three in stock. I'll have to see if there is any way
to get information for these, and for the apparently hundreds of unpublished songs Hagen
also has. Maybe I can get in touch with him somehow...
I found a web site for Daron Aric Hagen! Here it is. I am going to try and email
him directly...Meanwhile, I have also contacted John Eaton, George Flynn, and Frank
Warren.

Really sick (nasal infection). Going to the doctor tomorrow morning. Sang
for Craig Rutenberg today anyway, because I couldn't pass up the opportunity, but it
really tired me out.
Meanwhile, got another cycle of Richard Pearson Thomas in the catalog, this one a really interesting and fun setting of some
Edward Lear nonsense. And by the way, has anyone heard of a contemporary
American composer by the name of Hagen? Daron Aric Hagen might be it. Ring a bell?
Anyone know how to get in touch with him or get some of his music? He is
mentioned in Carol Kimball's book as an extremely talented former student of Ned Rorem.
